Among the many G20 countries who want to partner with Africa, China can play the leading role in developing economic prosperity on the continent, says Matthew Birtch, lecturer of Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), University of Pretoria, while commenting on the just concluded G20 Summit held in Hangzhou on September 4-5 and its impact on Africa at a seminar on China's economy and opportunities for South Africa, held at GIBS, Johannesburg on September 5, 2016.

Birtch said that the G20 is very important for Africa, where there is a population in excess of 1 billion people and which still remains the final continent to be developed.

"We have [a] development dividend and a lot of growth potential. The median age of Africans is 19. On the continent, we need to unlock the potential and most of [the] G20 countries want to partner with Africa, and I think that China can play that leader's role in partnering with Africa, especially with Sub-Saharan Africa in developing economic prosperity on the continent," he said.

He hailed the G20 a great success and said that people noticed that in Hangzhou, China had hosted a fantastic G20.

"[A] good job and good work from all the people involved," he said of the G20.

Birtch pointed out that the G20 economies comprises 80 percent of global GDP, and they must work together to push the global economy forward.

He said that China, along with the United States, play important roles in stabilizing the global economy.

"There are a lot of instabilities both in the Western markets and some of the Southeast Asian markets, and China has to really play along with the United States in stabilizing the global economy and driving growth," he said, adding that China is going to play a very strong role in the move to strengthen the global economy going forward, and move the GDP growth from about 3 percent to 4 percent in the next four years.

China's Economy and Opportunities for South Africa is a seminar sponsored by the Chinese Consulate General in Johannesburg and organized by the China Africa Youth Association. Major panelists included Chinese senior economist Gao Jian, GIBS scholar Matthew Birtch and Senior Executive Vice President of Bank of China Johannesburg Branch Gao Desheng.
