Huawei South Africa recently launched a campaign in the country to promote unity, create more opportunities and help build a brighter future for people of South Africa and on the continent.

Known as "ConnectUnity: Moving Beyond Connectivity for South Africa," the campaign was inspired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's "Thuma Mina (Send Me)" call to action, according to an executive of the technology company.

"Connectivity has a transformative power to bring opportunity, build communities and promote unity needed to build a brighter future for South Africa and Africa," Huawei South Africa Chief Executive Officer Spawn Fan said at the launch ceremony held at the Huawei Office Park in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 7.

"We wanted to do more outside our ICT investment, so ConnectUnity is about showcasing the value connectivity brings to everyone it touches. We want to encourage the spirit and power of togetherness," Fan added.

South African Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, speaking at the event, stressed the importance of extending connectivity and access to all South Africans so that they can be involved in dialogue.

"The key word is unity," Ndabeni-Abrahams said.

She said dialogues had to be created to ensure unity in diversity.

"For people to be meaningfully involved in that dialogue, they need to be connected. We want people to be able to provide solutions to their own challenges," she said.

A song and a music video on the theme of ConnectUnity were released at the launch ceremony.

Xavier Wong, Huawei Creative Director, said a song was a natural choice for the South African campaign because music is a uniting force.

The song, ConnectUnity, was produced by producer/rapper Big Dreamz and features up and coming female vocalist Mikhale Jones. Grammy nominated producer and audio engineer Mazwe Mtetwa collaborated on the track.
