The relationship between Zambia and China is set to grow stronger as it is built on a foundation of friendship and solidarity, said Zambian Ambassador to China H.E Winnie Natala Chibesakunda in a statement presented on an occasion to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Zambia’s independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Zambia and China held at the Zambian Embassy in China on 26 October.
“China stood in solidarity and support for our freedom. The bonds of friendship which have been forged since the establishment of bilateral ties have blossomed to such heights that China has since earned its well-deserved status as an “all-weather-friend” to Zambia. I have no doubt in my mind that our two countries will continue to cooperate and collaborate together as we push for a shared future for humanit,” Chibesakunda said.

The independence of Zambia was attained on October 24, 1964, and could not be achieved without the clear vision, commitment to hard work and determination by the leadership and people of Zambia. Chibesakunda acknowledged Zambia’s Founding Forefather and freedom fighters for leading Zambia to freedom. “Our Founding Father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda together with other visionary and valiant freedom fighters led Zambia to political independence and nationhood. For this we shall forever remain grateful to our forefathers.”

On October 26 that same year, Zambia established diplomatic ties with China and is the first country in southern Africa to establish diplomatic ties with China. On October 26 this year, China and Zambia marked the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between the two countries. Despite being faced with the daunting task of economic emancipation, Zambia still calls for closer cooperation and unity of purpose among Zambians and is certain that further relations with China will help Zambia attain the prosperity and high living standards they require.

“We welcome and commend many Chinese companies that have invested in several sectors of Zambia’s economy. The investments have led to creation of numerous job opportunities as well as poverty alleviation. We are hopeful that more and more Chinese companies will continue to take advantage of the conducive investment environment in mining, construction, energy, manufacturing and agricultural sectors, as well as those in multi-facility economic zones.” said Chibesakunda.

The ambassador also congratulated China for the successful celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. She expressed gratitude for the invitation which was extended to her country to participate in the 2019 Beijing Expo where Zambia was awarded two certificates of honor, namely merit of participation award and special international indoor area award.
