“Stay strong, China! Stay Strong, Wuhan!” These slogans were chanted together by students at the Chinese Corner of the Government Secondary School Garki, FCT, in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, on February 11, in a show of support to Wuhan in central China's Hubei Province, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria were invited to witness the heartwarming performance.
"Nigeria and China are friends and brothers. When Ebola epidemic raged in Nigeria, China's generous assistance helped the Nigerian people overcome the difficulties. Now that our brothers are in trouble, we should support China," said Yakubu, an official from the Secondary Education Bureau of the Federal Capital Territory, the area that hosts Abuja.
Chinese Corner is an important platform for Nigerian students to understand China and learn Chinese culture. It has been launched in 13 local middle schools, with Garki being the first to open it.
Nwakucha, Deputy Principal of the school, said that students are the future, and students attending the Chinese Corner will carry forward the Nigeria-China friendship. At such a special moment, a support event for China will deepen the emotional bond of children with China and continue to pass the friendship between Nigeria and China for generations.
