Tanzania in Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gases
  ·2016-08-22

Tanzanian authorities said on Friday they have come up with a number of climate change mitigation strategies, including reducing greenhouse gases by between 10 and 20 percent by 2030.

"These strategies are intended to make our contribution to the global mitigation agenda," said Freddy Manyika, an environment officer from the country's Vice-President's Office.

He told a press conference in the country's coastal city of Tanga that the mitigation actions will focus on energy, transport, forestry and waste management.

He said other mitigating factors included the promotion of clean energy technologies for power generation and diverse renewable sources such as geothermal, wind, solar and renewable biomass.

Manyika said Tanzania also planned to expand the use of natural gas for power generation, cooking, transport and thermal services through improvement of natural gas supply systems in the country.

He said the country was also promoting low emission transport systems through deployment of mass rapid transport systems and investments in air, rail, marine and road infrastructures.

Other mitigating contributions were strengthening nationwide tree planting programmes and initiatives, said Manyika.
