Over 2.8 mln Libyans sign up to vote in December elections |
Xinhua News Agency ·2021-08-18 |
Libya's elections commission said on August 17 that over 2.8 million voters have registered for the elections in December.
Libya's High National Elections Commission said that a total of 2,834,451 people signed up to vote.
Libya, home to around 6.8 million people, has been working to hold general elections in December in a bid to end the country's years-long conflict.
The commission called on Libyan citizens overseas to start registration, which will start from Wednesday.
Libya has been locked in a civil war since the ouster and killing of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The situation escalated in 2014, splitting power between two rival governments: the UN-backed Government of National Accord based in the capital Tripoli and another in the northeastern city of Tobruk allied with the eastern-based military commander Khalifa Haftar.
In February, Libya's warring factions agreed to create an interim government under the auspices of the United Nations, which will rule the country until the Dec. 24 elections.
