Issue 42
From the Editor - November 2017
  ·2017-11-03

The weather on this side of the world is now about as unpredictable as Donald's Trumps speeches. We are still in desperate need of rain in the Western Cape of South Africa and the drought has forced some hotels to remove bath plugs since bathing is certainly a waste of water. In the Gauteng Province of the country at least, there has been welcome rain and everything is imbued with the earthy, vanilla scent of spring. In this issue we take you on a "foodie" journey of two regions in South Africa. One of the best restaurants in Johannesburg called View at the five-star Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel has just acquired a brand new head chef. Farrel Hirsch brings an inspired menu to his new position, fusing East and West, classic and new and all sorts of original flavor combination without compromising on freshness or nutrition. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

Then we treat you to a food experience on the complete opposite end of the spectrum in a shanty town near Cape Town called Kayamandi. The Kayamandi shanty town tour combines a fascinating cultural tour through the town with its colorful history and ends up at the home of one of the local women where you will be treated to African hospitality and food the memories of which will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Also in this issue, we look at a new hotel group which aims to step into a very important gap in the African hotel space. Short of massive global (usually bland and impersonal) hotel brands, Africa woefully lacks a unique African lifestyle hotel signature. Until now. The Latitude Hotels Group marries the very best of the local community in which it is based with all the conveniences a traveler would expect at home. Have a look at their special properties.

And last but most certainly not least, one of the world's most anticipated art museums has finally launched in Cape Town. More than four years in the making in Cape Town, the boldly ambitious Zeitz MOCAA project reimagines the V&A Waterfront's historic grain silo into the world's largest museum of contemporary art from Africa.

So enjoy this November issue of Africa Travel and until we meet again, bon voyage!
