African scholars support China’s fight against COVID-19
 ChinAfrica ·2020-02-20

African think tanks are standing with China in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic by sending letters to the China-Africa Institute, in which they expressed their appreciation and support for China's measures to combat the epidemic, and wished China a victory as soon as possible.

Nkolo Foe

Professor Nkolo Foe, former Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, said Cameroonian people oppose anti-China and anti-Asian remarks, which amounts to racism. He said Cameroonians are impressed by the fact that the Chinese Government has taken effective measures to control the epidemic and build a new hospital with over a thousand beds in just a few days. His colleagues know about China's fight against the epidemic through TV news and they admire the efficiency of the Chinese Government, he said.

Jeremy Wightman

Jeremy Wightman, Publishing Director of South Africa’s Human Sciences Research Council, wishes Chinese people good health. He said people in South Africa know about the progress of the epidemic through media such as BBC, Al Jazeera, Russia Today, CNN and Sky News and news from China, which emphasize that the outbreak of the virus is a global problem and a concern for all humankind. He said South African people are impressed by the Chinese Government’s active measures to control the epidemic, especially the two new hospitals in Wuhan built in just two weeks, which also shows that the Chinese Government has very strong governance capacity.

Sande Ngalande

Sande Ngalande, Zambian Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia, said that Zambian people always care about the Chinese people and pray for them, especially those infected by the virus. He said Zambian people generally believe that China is dealing with the epidemic in a transparent, systematic and effective manner and that China will soon win the battle. He believes that Zambians in China should stay in China, where they will be taken care of, and should follow the Chinese Government’s call to reduce outdoor activities.
