By Ni Yanshuo Web Exclusive ·2020-05-01
At a critical time that South Africa is in urgent need of medical protective gear for its people to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, a big batch of medical supplies arrived in the country on April 30. The supplies come as a donation from global internet group Naspers South Africa, which provided 1 billion rand ($53.5 million) for its purchase in the Chinese market.

With help from the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, the whole process of procurement, customs clearance, shipment and delivery took only 20 days. This is the second and largest batch, which contained 6 million pieces of personal protective equipment.

"We are truly grateful that we have cooperation with Naspers and many others that have decided to lend a hand and assist our own fight against COVID-19," said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa while attending the handover ceremony at the Distribution Center of Takealot, South Africa's leading online store, in Johannesburg on April 30.

Official statistics from the Department of Health of South Africa show that as of April 30, the country has tested 230,537 people, with 5,647 confirmed cases and 103 deaths.

"We are also grateful to China, that continues to supply these medical supplies that we so need. Other personal protective equipment and testing sets are coming. So we are beginning to get more and more of these and we believe that we will be able to spread these around the country in an orderly manner," said Ramaphosa.

Piles of KN95 facemasks, face shields and other protective equipment are stored at the Distribution Center of Takealot, for imminent onward distributed to medical workers nationwide.

"Today, the timely delivery of medical supplies purchased by Naspers from China marks another major measure taken by China to maximize its production capacity and open its medical supplies market to South Africa, so as to buttress South Africa's anti-epidemic capability," said Li Nan, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa at the handover ceremony.

According to Li, local Chinese people and enterprises in South Africa are more than happy to make donations to local communities. Up to now, Chinese people and enterprises have donated more than 4.3 million masks and over 60,000 protective suits and other equipment, as well as more than 3 million rand ($160,500) in cash to the fight against COVID-19.

"We are thankful for the donation the country has received from Naspers and facilitated also by China," said Ramaphosa.
