Amendment to CPC Constitution Approved

An amendment to the Constitution of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was approved at the Seventh Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which closed on Sunday.

Vice President Xi Jinping, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, elaborated on the draft of the amendment at the meeting, according to a communique released after the plenum.

The communique did not release the details of the amendment.

The Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee worked out the amendment to the Party Constitution at a meeting in October, saying the Party Constitution should be updated to reflect the Party's latest theoretical achievements in localizing Marxism and practical experience.

The October meeting stressed the importance of making an amendment to the CPC Constitution that conforms to the needs of the CPC's theoretical innovation, practice and development, as well as promotes the CPC's work and strengthens its construction.

In addition to the amendment to the CPC Constitution, the plenum also approved a report to be submitted to the upcoming 18th CPC National Congress by the 17th CPC Central Committee.

Both documents will be submitted to the 18th Party Congress, slated to open on November 8.

The latest amendment to the Party Constitution was made at the 17th CPC Congress in October 2007, when the "scientific outlook on development" was added into the Constitution.

Previously, the theory on building socialism with Chinese characteristics was enshrined in the Party Constitution at the 14th CPC Congress in 1992; Deng Xiaoping Theory was added into the Party Constitution as the guiding theory for the CPC to stand next to Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought at the 15th CPC Congress in 1997; The important thoughts of "Three Represents" were written into the Party Constitution at the 16th CPC Congress in November 2002.
