UN Officials Say CPC Congress Sends Encouraging Signals

A series of policies and guidelines formulated at the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) not only will favor China's long-term development, but also bear important global significance, UN senior officials said.

The congress actively advocated ecological progress and initiated to strive for "a beautiful China," sending encouraging signals to the world, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Dubai recently.

The policies not only will favor China's long-term development, but also bears important global significance, Eliasson told Xinhua.

In today's world and the future, all countries are increasingly linked together and no economy could push ahead the world's development alone, or stands outside the global interests, he said.

Every country and international organization need to work together to cope with major global challenges like resource shortages, environment deterioration and the financial crisis, he said.

As the ruling party in China, the CPC vigorously advocates ecological progress at its 18th National Congress. This not only deals with the Chinese people's future well-being, but also shows China's responsible attitude toward world ecological security, he said.

It is China's contribution to the international community, he said. The signal that China is dedicated to the Chinese nation's lasting development "is very encouraging and we welcome," he added.

Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, visited China last month and was deeply impressed by China's development achievements.

China currently is in deep structural change, and it is very important that China has put upholding social fairness and justice at the center of its development strategy, Barcena told Xinhua.

China and Latin America could learn from each other in such fields as sustainable development, poverty reduction, wealth distribution and social justice, Barcena said.

As new economies are demonstrating their rising growth vigor, developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America, including China, will embrace more opportunities for development, she said.

China will expand domestic demand and lift Chinese people's consumption power and it is a major opportunity for Latin America, she said, adding that Latin American countries' stronger cooperation with China bears strategic significance.

Abdalla Hamdok, deputy executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, said Africa is interested in the CPC congress and expects to strengthen its cooperation with China.

Over the past years, China's development in various fields has caught the eyes of the world and China's development has largely benefited Africa. He said Africa expects that the new CPC leadership will further advance the China-Africa partnership, he said.

In today's changing world, China's development is very important to Africa, he said. China has been supporting Africa in building energy and large infrastructure facilities, which have played an important role in pushing Africa's development.

Over the past decades, China has changed significantly under the correct leadership of the CPC, he said. The CPC's 18th National Congress will exert great influences on China's future and Africa highly expects of China's further growth.
