The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) hosted its Earth Hour 2012 campaign promotion seminar on February 27, 2012 in Beijing.

With the slogan “There’s an Environmentalist in Each of Us,” Earth Hour 2012 will take place on March 31, 2012 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to show their support for environmentally sustainable action.

Apart from turning off lights, Earth Hour 2012 also calls on individuals, businesses, communities and governments and to go beyond an hour and make energy saving a daily habit.

“Earth Hour 2012 is about reminding people of their innate love of nature, and that nature should be an important factor in decision making,” said Allen Chai, Senior Communications Officer at WWF’s Beijing Office, who is in charge of the Earth Hour campaign in China.

Over 40 Chinese companies, media and environmental organizations attended the event.

At the seminar, Dr. Yang Fuqiang, Natural Resources Defense Council’s Senior Advisor on Energy, Environment and Climate Change, spoke about the Durban Climate Change Conference COP 17 and Earth Hour. In addition, Sony (China) Ltd., 22 International Art Plaza, and Sohu.com Green Channel showcased their participation in last year’s Earth Hour campaign on behalf of businesses, communities and the media, respectively.

2012 marks Earth Hour’s fourth year in China, according to Allen Chai. He also noted that WWF had launched the official Chinese website www.earthhour.org.cn, where individuals, companies and government agencies may share their commitment to the environment.
