South African photojournalist Francisco Little wins "Beijing Spirit" Photo Award (PHOTOS BY LIU JIAN) |
For South African photojournalist Francisco Little, the Beijing spirit is all about cheerfulness, enthusiasm and motivation, best shown by his image of Santa Claus sending a festive A-OK message to commuters on the subway.
Little's image, titled Subway Santa, went on to win third prize at the "Beijing Spirit in the Eyes of Foreign Friends Photo Contest."
"It happened very fast as the train was pulling out of the station as I arrived at subway Line 2," he recalled. "The guy in the Santa suit made an OK sign and it made me feel that despite the hardships of life and the glum faces of tired commuters, there are always people in Beijing who are motivated and enthusiastic about what they are doing, and in turn, they try to motivate and cheer up others in the city."
Subway Santa stands out among a total of 3,729 photos submitted by participants from 63 countries. After a lengthy period of strict evaluation from a team of judges, first, second and third prizes were selected.
Expat photographers received their awards from the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries at a ceremony on December 11, 2012. The winning images are displayed at a photo exhibition in the city and are the subject of a coffee table photo book.
The photo contest was first organized in 2009, and since then it has already seen four successive editions. Little, Africa Managing Editor ofChinAfrica, the leading monthly magazine on Sino-African affairs published by Beijing Review, also received the second prize at this photo contest in 2010.
