The First South Africa-China Capital Market Forum was recently jointly launched by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange(JSE) and the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The collaborative forum was the first of its kind to focus on opportunities in the capital market.
During the two-day forum, more than 100 representatives from the two countries' financial, legal and industrial communities came together to discuss collaboration prospects, possible problem points and Renminbi settlement.
Dr. Gui Minjie, Chairman of the Shanghai Stock Exchange said that the capital market in China is strong and welcomes the engagement of global investors to share the fruit of China's reform and opening up. "The potential for bilateral cooperation is big and the direct investment and trade between companies of the two countries have paved the way for the capital market cooperation in the two countries," he said.
Nicky Newton-King, Chief Executive Officer of JSE, said that many of the topics discussed at the forum were never discussed before, and that she hoped it would serve as the beginning of a dialogue between the two countries in terms of their capital markets.
The organizers said that the forum will be held every two years, with the next event held in Shanghai in 2015.
