 Overseas donations pledged

China

A recent report shows China was pledged 10 billion yuan ($1.58 billion) in overseas charitable donations in 2009, with 7.64 billion yuan ($1.14 billion) having been received. The overseas donations took up 18.5 percent of the total donations of 54.2 billion yuan ($8.09 billion) in 2009, according to the China Charity and Donation Information Center. Nearly 50 percent of the overseas donations were from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese.

 Refugees aid

Somalia

Aid agencies operating in Somalia have reached more than half a million population in the war-ravaged nation, where the ongoing fighting exacerbated by drought is forcing millions of people to continue to depend on humanitarian assistance. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Somali Red Crescent Society have provided food and urgently needed household items for over 540,000 displaced people and vulnerable residents over recent months.

 Music support

United Nations

The United Nations has released music DVD from Kenyan slum children in Nairobi to support their counterparts in Haiti. A statement from the Nairobi-based UN Information Center said the Wafalme Kidz from the slums of Nairobi has produced a song to bring a message of hope to the children in Haiti. Following a devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, these street-children felt they should do something to support their counterparts in Haiti, now living in similar conditions. The song resulted in the production of a touching DVD/CD package.

 BRIC gains momentum

South Africa

South Africa's entry into BRIC at the end of 2010, without doubt, would promote the group's prominence in the world and boost cooperation among emerging economies, analysts and media said. However, they said South Africa needs to exert greater efforts to develop its own economy in order to play a bigger role in mitigating the world economy's imbalances together with BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China. The country's Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said the entry would bring the country a better environment to the boost economy.
