The United Nations Population Fund said Nigeria has now the sixth largest population in the world. Nigeria, which ranked seventh in the World Population Report of July 1, has overtaken Pakistan, to reach sixth spot. Nigeria still occupies the first position as the most populous country in Africa.

Road Accidents Soar

Zambia

 Zambia has seen a rise in road accidents in the third quarter of the year, compared with the second quarter, a statement released in early November by the Road Transport and Safety Agency. Road traffic accidents rose to 5,975 in the third quarter of 2011 from 5,204 in the second quarter. Human error was to blame, which was deemed to be preventable if motorists could adhere to the rules of the road.

China

Chinese and African scientists have set up a research base for desertification control and sand-related industries in Nigeria's Kano state. This is part of an African aid project jointly sponsored by Gansu Desert Control Research Institute (GDCRI) and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese and Nigerian researchers will strive to restore local ecology and boost economic growth, said GDCRI's head Liu Shizeng. Project completion date target is the end of 2013.
