The number of wild pandas in the vicinity of Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has risen from 18 to 41 over the past decade, according to the latest research. The increase is attributed to the pandas' improved reproduction rates and migration from surrounding areas, said the city's Bureau of Forestry.

Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo will voluntarily contribute $3 million to the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which is experiencing financial difficulties, according to the country's Foreign Ministry. "The government reaffirms its commitment to the noble ideals of UNESCO. This contribution is the very first one that our country is making to the UN institution," the ministry said in a statement.

Grants for Virtual Varsity

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $15.6 million grant to strengthen the capacity of the African Virtual University. The AfDB's group board of directors approved the grant for the financing of the establishment of the university's 12 new open distance and e-learning centers.
