Thriving in Nature Reserves

The ecological systems in China's nature reserves are stable, with the number of some endangered animal and plant species living there growing, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced recently. A press release said nature reserves are protecting more than 85 percent of rare species. China has 428 national nature reserves covering more than 96 million hectares. The population of endangered and rare species, such as golden monkeys, Asian elephants and dawn redwood trees, has been growing in these areas.

Ghana

Curb on Plastic Products

Ghana is to start shutting down factories that don't produce bio-degradable plastics from November 1. In July 2014, stakeholders in the sector had agreed to add bio-degradable additives to all light plastics produced in Ghana. Musah Zakaria, a public relations officer of Environment Ministry of Kenya, cautioned in a statement earlier that the ministry was also taking steps to ensure that imported non-biodegradable plastics do not enter the country from November.

Somalia

Sprucing Up Security Sector

The Somali Government has announced a new reform in the security sector to improve the country's stability. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the nation must take constructive steps to build a more integrated, accountable and transparent security sector. Ensuring regular and timely pay for national security sector personnel and carrying out a headcount of them in the next three months with international representatives invited to join the counting process are part of the measures to be undertaken.

Africa

Hitting an Economic Low

Sub-Saharan Africa's (SSA) growth will slow down in 2015 to 3.7 percent from 4.6 percent in 2014 - the lowest growth rate since 2009 - amid weak global economic conditions, the World Bank has projected. Its new Africa's Pulse, the biannual analysis of economic trends, says the 2015 forecast remains below the robust 6.5 percent growth in GDP the region sustained in 2003-08. Growth in SSA will be repeatedly tested as new shocks occur in the global economic environment, underscoring the need for governments to embark on structural reforms to alleviate domestic impediments to growth.

Improving Public Health System

China and African countries' health ministers have stressed the importance of establishing a resilient public health system in Africa, especially a Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the African Union as well as in individual countries. The officials met in Cape Town for the Second Ministerial Forum of China-Africa Health Development in October. The theme was Promoting the Access of Healthcare Service in Africa: Improving China-Africa's Cooperation in Public Health in Post-Ebola Era. The participants agreed to strengthen collaboration on universal health coverage. Based on lessons learnt from the Ebola outbreak and the global response, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in public health by building a resilient public health system, and enhance collaboration on health issues. China has pledged to continue providing scholarships and training to African public health professionals, while African countries will support the recruitment process and ensure that qualified candidates are identified and trained.

China-Ethiopia

Getting Connected

Chinese telecom solutions provider Huawei has delivered a project to promote resources sharing and educational exchanges among schools in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. The Addis Ababa School Net Project will create connectivity among 65 education institutions - 64 secondary schools and a college - through information and communication technology infrastructure. The Addis Ababa City Education Bureau implemented the project with an investment of more than $11.5 million.

China

From Digital Products to Startups

Zhongguancun, a nationally renowned technology hub in Beijing, will transform its development model from an electronics-dominated to an innovation-oriented economy by focusing on serving startups amid a recession in the electronics trade, local authorities announced in October. According to the announcement by Zhongguancun Haidian Park, the core area of Zhongguancun will bid farewell to traditional electronics stores that currently cover about 150,000 square meters of office space and cultivate innovation-based business and enterprise startups. The area will focus its efforts on fully utilizing limited space for innovation incubators, smart hardware, Internet-plus business and other new business. In short, Zhongguancun has been set to develop cleaner and more sustainable business in the future.

Honoring Confucian Cuisine

China will seek to have the family cuisine of ancient philosopher Confucius listed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. A committee for the standardization of Confucius' family cuisine was formed in Qufu City at the Fifth Asian Food Study Conference in October. "It will take at least three years before we file the application," said Liu Deguang, Director of the committee. The cuisine developed as a result of frequent visits by Chinese emperors, high-ranking officials, and other distinguished guests to Confucius' home. "Confucius' family cuisine is complex, labor-intensive and demands great attention to detail," said chef Wang Lingtao. The most complex banquet in Confucius' family consisted of 196 dishes, the details of which were passed down only to descendants or apprentices. Food experts say the ancient recipes should be made public for their preservation.

Sun Scores Again

Sun Jihai, the first Chinese player to score a goal in the English Premier League, has been inducted into football’s Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum in Manchester. The honor was conferred during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK. Sun, who joined Manchester City in 2002, quickly became a favorite with City fans for his solid defense and attacking forays. He was voted the club’s best player in September 2002. He made 130 appearances for Manchester City.

Klaasen on Winning Spree

Raven Klaasen of South Africa, teamed up with Marcelo Melo of Brazil, claimed their second straight doubles title against Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini of Italy at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in October. The partnership was for the second week in a row after winning the doubles title in Tokyo as well. Klaasen said the last two weeks have been great as they played some really good tennis together. It’s been a lot of fun on and off the court. “When you win this much, it’s good out there,” he said.
