China Education Association for International Exchange

LISTEN UP: Exchange student teaching in China (XINHUA)

Student exchange is an effective way for young minds to share thoughts, cultures and insights. The China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) recently selected 200 student candidates from across China for the 2010-11 CEAIE-AFS Program, who will be part of exchange activities with students from about 30 other countries.

An exchange program for secondary school teachers and students, CEAIE-AFS Program was launched by the CEAIE and the American Field Service (AFS) and introduced to China in 2000.

In recent years, an increasing number of Chinese students take active part in the AFS Program, which reflects the favorable developing trend of the CEAIE-AFS Program in China and promotes the nongovernmental exchanges between China and other countries.

Besides the CEAIE-AFS Program, the CEAIE also carries out other international exchange projects and programs, such as the World Women University Presidents Forum and China Annual Conference on International Education.

Established in July 1981, the CEAIE is a nonprofit organization conducting international educational exchanges. At present, the CEAIE has 159 member institutions, including educational institutions at various levels.

The CEAIE has established educational associations for international exchanges in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities as well as in 11 lower-level cities on the Chinese mainland. As the executive body of the CEAIE, the secretariat has cooperation with more than 1,000 domestic associations and institutions, and has established long-term relations with over 170 education organizations of more than 50 countries and regions.

The major responsibilities of the CEAIE include promoting the exchange and cooperation among Chinese and foreign schools, cooperating with foreign education institutions and academies to conduct training for the educational talents at different levels, holding bilateral or multilateral international education conferences, symposia and exhibitions, undertaking education programs sponsored by overseas education institutions, and recruiting foreign teachers for Chinese education institutions.

In addition, the CEAIE is also responsible for people-to-people exchange programs, such as Teacher and Student Exchange Program in Basic Education, Chinese Culture Study Tour for International Students, and Teacher Training and Exchanges Hand-in-Hand Action which is the volunteer-based English teacher training program for the underdeveloped areas in China. The CEAIE also provides consultation, recommendation, and visa application assistance service for Chinese students who are about to study abroad.
