Getting the Balance Right
In the next five years China will balance economic growth and improving the living standards of its people
by Liu Wei

Ma Zhiming, CPPCC Member & Researcher of Academy of Mathematics & Systems Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences

MA ZHIMING

China has been implementing the family planning policy for quite a long time, which is necessary and effective. However, the policy should be adjusted at the current stage. One example is that we are still using the prediction model of population development equation established in the late 1970s. Actually, the parameters should have been adjusted at the end of last century.

Population policy adjustment is a complicated issue of common concerns, which also involves employment, social security and land resources. The policy is also closely related to social structure, aging society and education. So, we can never make simple decisions in this regard.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to establish a research center of population and sociology to conduct scientific researches in this field. I suggest that the data of the sixth census, and database of the previous census, should be open to scientific and research institutes so that our research findings can provide scientific basis for government's population policy adjustment.
