Getting the Balance Right
In the next five years China will balance economic growth and improving the living standards of its people
by Liu Wei

Yang Lan, CPPCC Member & Board Chairwoman of Sun Media Group Holding Ltd.

YANG LAN

I am concerned with child development. This year, I put my focus on how to integrate children of migrant workers into urban life so that they can enjoy resources in urban areas.

Though many schools provide nine-year compulsory education for children of migrant workers, their opportunity of studying in high schools is still very slim after leaving junior middle schools. At that time, they are not legally allowed to work because of their young age. So, in the two to three years after leaving junior middle schools, these children have nothing to do.

I found that some vocational schools in Beijing still have vacant seats, while many youngsters do not know how to apply to go to these schools due to the lack of related information. So, I suggest that in some junior middle schools for children of migrant workers, we should launch vocational education for grade 2 and grade 3 students; meanwhile, information related to vocational schools should be publicized in communities with more migrant workers.

More importantly, I hope migrant workers' children can also partly or fully enjoy government subsidies as their urban peers.
