South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, known as "Blade Runner," was selected to run the individual 400 meters and the 4x400 relay at the London Olympics, making him the first double amputee in sporting history to compete at any able-body games.
Scientist Honored
Pan Jiazheng, a prestigious hydrologist, was conferred with the Achievement Award at the Ninth Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Awards recently. The prize was given by the Chinese Academy of Engineering for honoring top experts in engineering science and technology. Pan, 85, is a major supporter of the Three Gorges Dam project.
