Encapsulated Living

Yes

Liu Qiyue

Capsule apartment trial resident

Living in a capsule apartment is more practical than living in a one-storey commune, which is like a low-income graduate's ghetto. Financially, the cheap rent is attractive to those who just graduated and whose top priority is self-reliance. Pursuing a comfortable lifestyle should be relegated to the back of their minds. They can save a lot of money each month by living in a capsule apartment.

A capsule apartment is sufficient for a single person to live in. I found the room, whose structure is designed to meet basic human needs, is equipped with living necessities, such as a bed, computer table, power and cable plugs. With housing prices skyrocketing in Beijing, a capsule apartment is surely the most appropriate choicefor new graduates. We should thank the designer, Huang Rixin, for making these capsules possible.

Capsule apartments bring hope for those who want to seek their fortunes in big cities like Beijing and this style of accommodation is an inevitable product of high living costs. Currently, the housing price is relatively high. At the same time, the newly built economically affordable housing is not enought to accommodate low-income people as these are snapped up rapidly. To maintain social stability, the urban low-income residents should be properly accommodated. In the process of rapid urbanization, some people will inevitably lead a poor life. For those new graduates and migrant workers, capsule apartments provide them with affordable and temporary shelter.

For some urban residents, capsule apartments bring them opportunities to make profit. They get compensation from property developers for home relocation. As some of them have no fixed income, they can lead a stable life by using the money to build capsule apartments and rent them out. From this aspect, capsule apartments not only solves the problem of providing local residents with a living, but also helps put a roof over the heads of new graduates and migrant workers.

Capsule apartments provide a viable alternative during the interim period before the government solves the housing problem of low-income urban residents.

Wen Jiao

Job hunter in Beijing

My hometown is in Tianjin. Majoring in Environmental Management, I have not found a job since I came to Beijing a year ago. The low rent of the capsule apartment attracts me. As soon as I saw the information on the Internet, I rented one and moved in. It only costs me 250 yuan ($36.9) a month to rent a separated room here. As newly graduated students who are full of hopes and dreams but short on finances, having a private place to live in is enough for them no matter how harsh its environment is. Being young, we should have the courage to tough it out.

What makes things good is that living in a capsule apartment feels like being at home as it gives me a feeling of safety. I can do whatever I want here and relax myself totally.
