Should Parents Escort Their Children to First-Year University Enrollment?
The phenomenon that parents escorting their children to universities has sparked heated debate across China

To escort their children to university, the parents need to put aside their work and spend extra money on the trip. For me, that is unnecessary spending.

University is a place not only to learn knowledge, but also to foster students' capacity of being independent so as to lay the foundation for their future life in the society. Parents should set a good example for students, telling them that they are now adults and should do what is expected of them.

What parents should do when their children go to university is to help them shift their mindset from being a child under parents' protection to being an adult who can take care of themselves and even take care of others.

I didn't want my parents to come here with me because I know what to do. I tried to persuade them to let me come here alone, but failed. Actually, when they are here, they cannot help me too much since I can do the work all by myself.

I am no longer a kid, and I don't want my new classmates and teachers to see me as a person still relying on parents for everything. As a man, I want to be independent.

I keep thinking about this question, "Do the university students really need their parents to escort them on their way to the university?" My answer is, these parents are spoiling their children. Though the phenomenon is widely challenged, it continues year after year.

Some parents become very stressed at the thought of their children being far away from them and worry that having their children do things, such as registration, other than study may waste their valuable time. The consequence is that many students do well in school, but cannot live independently. There are media reports every year that some university students have to quit school because they cannot live by themselves, though they perform well in their studies.
