Issue 4

From the Travel Editor - June 2014

Welcome travellers from China to the fourth issue of ChinAfrica Travel. This month we stay within South Africa as we take a look at two beautiful and special destinations in and around the city of Johannesburg – the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosebank Johannesburg and the Silverstar Hotel and Casino, just a little further outside of Johannesburg. We also focus on two unique Western cape destinations, Tintswalo and Grootbos.

The Hyatt Regency offers all one expects from such a famous, global hotel brand – luxury, excellent service and divine cuisine. The Executive Chef is a chap called Andrew Atkinson, best known for his role as judge in the South African Master Chef series. The food is sublime and the skill with which the team put their dishes together defies imagination.

This luxury hotel is also perfectly situated as a base from which to explore Johannesburg with all of the fascinating activities and experiences this glorious city has to offer as well.

About 30 kilometres away form Johannesburg you will find Silverstar, a 4-star hotel/casino in the famous Tsogo Sun portfolio of hotels and entertainment complexes. I spend a wonderful weekend there being wined and dined and as luck would have it, not doing to badly on the Roulette tables. Silverstar also gives you the chance to explore some of the areas world-famous attractions like The Cradle of Mankind, Maropeng, the Sterkfontein and the Wonder Caves, The Lion Park as well as the Krugersdorp Game Reserves, bungee jumping and canopy tours. Other nearby activities include Ingwenya Glass, Gilroy's Brewery, hot air ballooning, fly fishing, as well as two golf courses within a 10 km radius.

Grootbos Nature Reserve in the Western Cape, about 2 hour's drive from Cape Town, is simply sublime. There is just no other word for it. It is a conservation area focussed on protecting the natural flora of the area and the accommodation and service is like nothing you would have experienced before. Activities nearby also include wine routes and diving with Great White sharks!

Not far away, on the Atlantic coast, prolific travel writer and editor Justin Fox visited another jewel of the Cape – Tintswalo. The lodge is strung along the base of the cliffs among ancient milkwood trees with gabions holding back the might of the Atlantic. Its interiors are comfortable, cool and elegant, juxtaposed with the roar of the surf just metres away. The lodge has 10 luxury suites and one presidential suite, each named after and decorated in the style of a famous island. There's everything from Zanzibar to Robben, Sicily to Antigua. Each has a private balcony with jaw-dropping views, a fireplace, en-suite bathroom and fully stocked mini bar. You have to see it to believe it, says Justin.

In this issue we also focus on the very serious issue of rhino poaching and we give you, our Chinese readers, the chance to participate in a very special relocation program, designed to keep our beautiful animals safe and out of the horrible reach of poachers.

We hope you enjoy the June issue of ChinAfrica Travel and until next time, Bon Voyage!
