Tianjin Normal University

Tianjin Normal University

Tianjin Normal University (TNU), founded in 1958, was originally named Tianjin Teachers College and got the present name in June 1982. As the only key university of education in Tianjin, it at present has 23 colleges and 49 research institutions, and is the key research base for humanities studies funded by the Ministry of Education of China.

TNU has excelled in education-related disciplines, basic researches and some applied disciplines, with teacher training as its main feature. Among its over 2,300 faculty and staff members, there are nearly 600 professors and associate professors, and 39 doctoral supervisors working at the university. Currently the university has approximately 40,000 students.

Being one of the examination sites of HSK, the only national standardized test of Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers, TNU is also one of the 10 Chinese universities that undertake the task of training Chinese teachers for the Volunteer Program for International Chinese Teachers. This is the first national program to dispatch volunteers to foreign countries to teach Chinese. Moreover, the university has a training center for those who are interested in teaching foreigners Chinese.

As one of the first Chinese universities that are qualified to recruit international students, TNU began to recruit overseas students in 1964. It offers the students short- and long-term Chinese programs, and undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Presently, there are more than 1,000 students from about 30 countries and regions studying at TNU.

TNU has established close relations with about 60 universities and colleges of more than 20 countries and regions, and by now 78 foreign experts from 14 countries have been invited to deliver lectures or do collaborative academic research at the university. In addition, as one of the first 16 universities that established Confucius Institutes worldwide, TNU has set up Confucius Institutes in Kenya and Thailand.
