Tianjin Medical University
Tianjin Medical University (TMU) was established in 1951 as the first medical university after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. After nearly 60 years' development, it now ranks as one of the leading medical institutions in the country.
One of the first medical universities in China recognized by the World Health Organization, TMU has developed an integral system of medical education that includes clinical medicine, pharmacology, nursing, clinical lab sciences and medical administrations.
The medical education of the university includes a seven-year program, a five-year program, a four-year program and a three-year program. Currently, there are six university hospitals and over 30 teaching hospitals, altogether providing 15,000 beds for medical training, internship and practice.
As one of 74 universities in China with the approval of the Ministry of Education to accept overseas students, TMU currently has more than 1,000 students from 56 countries and regions enrolled in medical studies.
TMU has also more than 50 partner universities in 16 countries and regions and 108 guest professors from famous research institutes worldwide. In December 2007, the university celebrated a decade since recruiting the first group of foreign students.
New foreign students usually arrive in fall, yet some come in spring to get an early start in learning Chinese. Learning Chinese is compulsory for every student and is incorporated into the first two years of the medical curricula, as it is required to talk with patients during hospital visits and also for daily life.
