Founded in March, 1949, Yanbian University is a comprehensive university with national characteristics. Yanbian University is located in Yanji, the capital city of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. The university is approved by the Ministry of Education to be one of the Project 211 universities (Project 211: a national project aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century).

The university now has 19 colleges, offering a wide range of programs including economics, philosophy, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and management, with 13 national and provincial key disciplines, 7 national and 3 provincial characteristic disciplines.

Now there are over 20,000 students enrolled in full-time study in Yanbian University, including more than 16,000 undergraduates, over 3,000 postgraduates and doctoral candidates and 700 foreign students. The university employs 1,300 full-time teachers, and has invited more than 300 famous experts and scholars from home and abroad to be honorary professors, part-time professors or guest professors.

Yanbian University has established strong cooperative relationship with 113 universities and scientific research institutes from 11 countries and regions. The university has also established a Confucius Institute in Chungbuk University, South Korea.
