Founded in 1941, Heilongjiang University (HU) celebrates its 70th anniversary in March 2011. It was previously known as the Foreign Language School of Yan'an (Chinese Military and Politics University of the Anti-Japanese Invasion) in the early 1940s. Afterwards it moved to Harbin, and in 1958, was extended and rebuilt as Heilongjiang University.
During the years, HU has developed from a foreign language school to a comprehensive university with multiple disciplines covering foreign languages, philosophy, economics, law, education, arts, history, science, engineering, agriculture and management.
Currently, there are over 35,000 students enrolled in full-time study in HU, including around 5,000 graduate students. The university started recruiting foreign students in 1981. So far, over 8,500 international students have studied here. Over 1,500 international students are recruited annually.
Now HU has substantive cooperation and exchanges with 140 colleges worldwide, which includes Leeds University and Bradford University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Illinois in the United States. Meanwhile, HU has been established as the base of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Heilongjiang Province and the designated test center of HSK (the Chinese Proficiency Test).
