Situated in Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is widely recognized as one of the country's top universities and has consistently ranked among the best engineering schools.
Founded in 1920, HIT has developed into a large nationally renowned multi-disciplinary university. It now has 21 schools, offering 73 undergraduate degree programs, 148 master programs, and 82 doctorate programs. Though most of its schools are in science and engineering areas, it also has several schools in humanity, social sciences and management.
HIT currently has a high-level faculty of more than 3,000 teachers and researchers, including over 900 professors, 1,600 associate professors, and 25 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. At present, there are over 41,000 full-time students, comprising more than 25,000 undergraduates, over 11,500 postgraduates and 4,500 doctoral students.
Known as one of the top universities in China for space and defense-related research, HIT made great contribution to China's Shenzhou spacecraft project. In 2010, the Astronautics Innovation Research Center was established at HIT in conjunction with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp.
