In 1896, the forerunner of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Nanyang Public School was founded in Shanghai. In the 1930s, it was known as the "oriental MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)" due to its reputation of nurturing top engineers. A significant amount of its faculty was sent in 1956, by the Central Government, to Xi'an to help build Xi'an Jiaotong University in west China's Shaanxi Province. Afterward, the school was officially renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Today SJTU has five beautiful campuses with a combined area of about 3.23 million square meters. It consists of 31 schools and departments, conferring bachelor's degrees in 68 programs, master's degrees in 298, and doctoral degrees in 203. There are also 28 research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships, 11 state key laboratories and national engineering research centers.
SJTU boasts a large number of famous scientists and professors, including 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 1,900 professors and associate professors.
Students from SJTU have won top prizes in various competitions, including ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) International Collegiate Programming Contest, International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Electronics Design Contests.
