
In 1907, Tongji University, then known as Tongji German Medical School, was founded in Shanghai. A century later, it has developed into a state university with comprehensive disciplines in engineering, science, medicine, management, arts, law, and economics, while specializing in architecture, civil engineering and oceanography.
With an enrollment of more than 50,000 students, the university boasts over 4,200 qualified academic staff for teaching and research, including six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, seven academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 860 professors and 1,380 associate professors.
The university provides diverse courses at all levels, conferring bachelor's degrees in 82 programs, master's degrees in 218, and doctoral degrees in 94. There are also 19 post-doctoral mobile stations. As one of the leading institutions in scientific research, the university has built 22 state key laboratories and engineering research centers.
The university has been actively promoting its internationalization and established cooperation ties with institutions of higher learning over 10 countries in the fields of education, science, technology and economics. In recent years, various international joint programs have been developed between the university and its counterparts overseas, such as the Sino-German School and the Sino-French Institute of Engineering and Management.
