
Founded in 1954, Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) is a comprehensive local university in Shanghai, with prominence in teacher training and particular strength in liberal arts. The main pursuit of the university lies in the undergraduate education aimed at fostering highly qualified and application-oriented talents. In Shanghai, 70 percent of the teachers in primary and middle schools and 70 percent of the middle school principals are graduates from SHNU.
At present, with an enrollment of more than 40,000 students, SHNU has 84 undergraduate disciplines classified into 10 major subjects, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and agriculture. It confers master's degrees in 153 programs and doctoral degrees in 42 programs, and has six post-doctoral mobile stations. Some disciplines have achieved notable advantages with great influence in the academic circle such as Pedagogy, Chinese Language and Literature.
SHNU is made up of two main campuses, Xuhui campus and Fengxian campus, covering a total area of over 1.62 million square meters. It has 18 colleges and 104 research institutes, such as Shanghai Teachers' Training Center. The university has a sound faculty structure in which a large number of young and middle aged excellent teachers are led by a group of experienced experts and scholars. There are 2,955 members in the academic staff, including 270 professors and 548 associate professors.
