Founded in 1956, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) is one of the first four institutions of higher learning of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China. Through its development over half a century, the university has achieved great prestige in its integration of education, clinic, and scientific research on traditional Chinese medicine. In 1999, SHUTCM was honored as one of the National Excellent Colleges of Undergraduate Education by Ministry of Education, being the first university of traditional Chinese medicine honored with this reputation in China.

Today, SHUTCM has an enrollment of 9,388 students. There are 600 professors, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and national celebrated TCM doctors. The university has 19 subsidiary colleges and departments, five affiliated hospitals and 20 research institutes. It confers bachelor's degrees in 29 programs, master's degrees in 23 and doctoral degrees in 15.

SHUTCM has constantly promoted international cooperation, and entered into agreement with counterparts in 14 countries and regions worldwide. It has established an extensive international network in education, clinic and research of TCM. The university enrolls more than 800 international students for academic degree programs and more than 1,000 short-term students from 30 countries every year.
